How to Care for Your Painted Firepit

Simple Care Makes the Biggest Difference

A painted firepit is made to be enjoyed outdoors, but a little routine care will help keep it looking its best. The two most important things you can do are simple: clean out your firepit regularly and keep it covered when it is not in use.

These habits help reduce the buildup of ash, moisture, and debris that can wear on the finish over time. For more information on our firepits and available options, visit the Standard Hexagon Firepit.

Clean Out Your Firepit

Allow the firepit to cool completely, then remove ash and leftover debris. Ash can hold moisture against the steel, so clearing it out regularly is one of the best ways to protect your firepit.

  • Wait until the firepit is completely cool before cleaning.
  • Remove ash and debris instead of allowing them to build up.
  • Keep moisture from sitting inside the firepit.
  • Wipe away dirt and surface moisture before covering it.

Keep Your Firepit Covered

Covering your firepit when it is not in use makes the biggest difference. A cover helps keep out rain, snow, leaves, and other debris, which means less moisture and less cleanup between fires.

Our covers are a practical way to protect your firepit between uses. Before covering your firepit, make sure it is completely cool and reasonably dry. Trapping moisture under a cover can work against you, so give the firepit time to cool and dry after each use.

Touching Up the Painted Finish

Small chips or worn areas on the painted firepit can be touched up with Tremclad high heat paint. Clean and dry the area first, then follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions for application and curing.

Touch-ups are intended for the painted firepit body and exterior areas. The finish will naturally experience wear over time, especially on surfaces exposed to heat and outdoor weather. Regular cleaning and covering will help limit how often touch-ups are needed.

How to Care for Your Lid

We do not recommend repainting firepit lids. Paint will fail sometimes in awhile sometimes right away depending on the fire as the lid sits in direct flame. Repainting a lid is not the best long-term approach.

Instead, care for your lid with a high-heat oil and season it much like cast iron. The oil helps protect the surface and allows the lid to develop a natural seasoned finish through use.

Always let the lid cool completely before handling or applying oil, and follow the directions for the high-heat oil you choose.

A Quick Firepit Care Routine

  • Let the firepit and lid cool completely after every fire.
  • Clean out ash and debris regularly.
  • Keep the firepit covered whenever it is not in use.
  • Use Tremclad high heat paint for touch-ups on the painted firepit body.
  • Season the lid with high-heat oil instead of repainting it.

With these simple habits, your painted firepit can stay looking great and ready for many seasons of outdoor fires.
