Firepit Size: Why It Matters More Than You Think
Choosing the right firepit size is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your outdoor space. Too small and the fire feels underwhelming for a group; too large and it can overwhelm a compact patio. At Calgary Custom Pits, our hexagon firepits come in two sizes — 34 inch and 40 inch (measured point to point at the top) — each suited to different yard sizes and gathering styles.
Understanding the Measurements
Our firepits are measured point to point across the top of the hexagon — the widest span from one corner to the opposite corner. Both sizes share the same 10-inch standard basin depth and 5-inch flared legs, so the key difference is the footprint and fire capacity.
The 34-Inch Firepit: Ideal for Smaller Patios and Intimate Gatherings
The 34-inch model is the perfect choice if you have a smaller backyard, deck, or patio, or if you typically entertain groups of 4–6 people. It delivers a beautiful fire without demanding too much floor space, making it easy to arrange seating comfortably around it.
- Great for decks, smaller patios, and townhouse backyards
- Comfortably seats 4–6 people around the fire
- Easier to move and reposition
- Starting at $375 CAD in 10 Gauge steel
The 40-Inch Firepit: Built for Larger Spaces and Bigger Crowds
The 40-inch model is made for larger backyards and entertaining larger groups. The extra 6 inches in diameter creates a noticeably bigger fire and allows seating for 6–10+ people comfortably. If your outdoor space can accommodate it, the 40-inch delivers a more dramatic, centrepiece-worthy fire experience.
- Perfect for large patios, acreages, and open backyard spaces
- Comfortably seats 6–10+ people
- Creates a larger, more dramatic fire
- Starting at $500 CAD in 10 Gauge steel

Tips for Measuring Your Space
Before ordering, measure your outdoor area and consider these guidelines:
- Leave at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides of the firepit for safe seating
- For a 34-inch pit, plan for a usable area of roughly 10–12 feet in diameter including chairs
- For a 40-inch pit, plan for 12–15 feet in diameter including chairs
- Consider overhanging branches, fences, or structures — maintain safe clearance from all combustibles
Also Consider: Steel Gauge
Both sizes are available in 10 Gauge (standard) or an upgraded 7 Gauge steel. Heavier gauge steel means better heat retention and longer lifespan — especially important in Canadian climates. Read our full guide on 10 vs 7 gauge steel here.
