Steel Gauge Explained: What's the Difference Between 10 Gauge and 7 Gauge Firepits?

What Is Steel Gauge?

Steel gauge is a measurement of steel thickness — and here's the part that trips most people up: a lower gauge number means thicker steel. So 7 gauge is actually thicker and heavier than 10 gauge.

  • 10 Gauge steel = 0.135 inches thick
  • 7 Gauge steel = 0.1875 inches thick (3/16")

That extra thickness might not sound like much, but it makes a real difference in how your firepit performs and how long it lasts.

10 Gauge: Solid, Proven Performance

Our standard 10 gauge option is what we consider the minimum a firepit should be, It's lighter and easier to move if needed, and it's the most cost-effective way to get a handcrafted Calgary Custom Pits firepit.

7 Gauge: The Heavy-Duty Upgrade

The optional 7 gauge steel upgrade is for customers who want the absolute best. The extra steel mass means:

  • Better heat retention: The pit holds heat longer, so your fire radiates warmth more efficiently.
  • Greater resistance to warping: Thicker steel is more resistant to the repeated expansion and contraction cycles caused by heating and cooling.
  • Longer lifespan: With proper care, a 7 gauge pit will outlast a thinner-walled counterpart.
  • Heavier, more substantial feel: There's a noticeable difference in weight and presence — it simply feels more premium.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose 10 gauge if you want an upgrade from the big box thin firepits and still need something an an entry level price point.
Choose the 7 gauge upgrade if you use your firepit heavily, want maximum longevity, or simply want the best build quality available.

Both gauge options are available in the 34 inch and 40 inch Standard Hexagon Firepit. Configure your firepit here →
